On March 3rd the trial was held in a femicide case that had caused outrage all over Hungary. A 17-year-old girl, Csenge K., had been found dead in September 2017 in a storm drain near the northern Hungarian village of Borsodnádasd. The forensic examination established that she had been alive when she was thrown into the water, her death was caused by drowning. It was also established that she had been beaten before her death.
The court publication states that the perpetrator, Roland B. (22) had been partying with friends in the evening of September 2nd 2017, where he was drinking and smoking synthetic cannabinoids. Then he met Csenge K., whom he had known before, and they agreed to meet at the forest path near the church. Roland B. admitted meeting the girl, but then they had a fight and went separate ways. He claims that when he returned to the site of their argument, she was lying there unconscious. Then he undressed her and without checking if she was alive, pulled her to the forest path storm drain manhole, took off the grill and threw her in. He claims he thought she was dead, and he was afraid he would be accused of killing her.
The investigation could only prove that it was Roland B. who had thrown the girl down into the drain but not that he had physically abused her. Therefore, the judge declared him guilty of negligent manslaughter and sentenced him to four years in prison; as he had spent two and a half years in detention, he was free to leave the courtroom, he will have to serve the rest of his sentence once the verdict is final and binding. Roland B. and his lawyer accepted the verdict, the prosecutor decided to appeal.
Hearing the verdict, the victim’s mother started crying, and fell on her knees before the judge, begging her not to set the perpetrator free. After leaving the courtroom, the mother fainted in the corridor and had to be taken to hospital.
